Professor Toby Mottram was busy at the EU-Precision Livestock Farming Conference at Leuven, Belgium 10-12th September 2013. As well as judging the best paper and young scientist award, he co-authored a paper with Exeter University about video methods of monitoring mobility score. The main event for him was his paper “A novel method of calculating a SARA index by wireless rumen pH telemetry” with Jack mcCubbine and Seonaid Nimmo of eCow Ltd. This describes how the rumen pH bolus is being used to rewrite the diagnosis of SARA which is far more complex than a simple average depression in rumen pH. The papers are available here.
